The public service broadcaster committed a "serious breach" of media regulations by omitting to mention that the presenter of a film about Gaza was the son of a Hamas official, according to UK media regulator Ofcom.
An probe by the media regulator into Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has concluded that the film was "significantly deceptive".
The chief executive of the broadcaster had previously apologised, saying there had been "a major oversight in relation to truthfulness".
The regulator has ordered the broadcaster to air a prime-time announcement about its conclusions.
"Given this constitutes a serious breach of our code, we are directing the broadcaster to air a announcement of our determinations against it on BBC Two at nine o'clock in the evening, with a timing to be finalised," the statement read.
'Risk to Undermine Confidence'
The authority's statement stated: "Our investigation found that the film's omission to reveal that the presenter's male guardian occupied a post in the Hamas-administered administration was materially misleading.
"Consequently that the viewers did not have vital facts which may have been very significant to their evaluation of the narrator and the details he shared.
"Credibility is at the core of the relationship between a television network and its viewers, notably for a state-funded media outlet such as the public broadcaster.
"This failing had the potential to erode the very considerable degrees of confidence that audiences would have put in a factual film from the broadcaster about the conflict in Gaza."
The programme was withdrawn from iPlayer in February after the boy's familial connections were revealed, and in July an broadcaster's internal assessment determined it violated the organization's editorial guidelines on accuracy.
A representative for the broadcaster said: "The regulator's decision is in accordance with the conclusions of the corporation's inquiry, that there was a major oversight in the documentary in relation to the corporation's content standards on accuracy, which aligns with Rule 2.2 of the authority's broadcasting regulations.
"We issued an apology for this and we comply with the authority's determination in full. We will comply with the penalty as soon as the schedule and wording are confirmed."
