Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages leading to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."
