New research indicates that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such treatments should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
